Viewing a screen for as little as 2 hours per day can put you at risk for eye strain. Follow these tips to give your eyes a break!
Screen Time- Limit screen time where possible- opt for a phone call over a video call or use an e-reader or paper when able.
20-20-20 Rule- Give your eyes a break- every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Use an app such as Time Out, or Pomodoro for reminders.
Screen(s) Placement- A single screen should be right in front of you, arm's length distance away, with the top 1/3 level with your eyeline. 2 screens? Position them towards you like an open book, placing the dominant screen closer to the middle.
Adequate Lighting- Maintain adequate lighting when reading from paper documents and using the computer- use gentle, ambient lighting for computer work and ambient lighting combined with a desk lamp for paperwork.
Dry Eyes- We blink half as much when viewing a computer screen compared to reading from paper. This can cause eyes to become dry and irritated. Use a humidifier or talk to your optometrist to find out if eye drops are appropriate.
Eliminate Glare- Prevent bright lights or sunlight from shining directly in your eyes or reflecting off of your screen. Reposition your desk away from bright lights, purchase window coverings, or invest in anti-glare screen covers.
Enlarge Text- Enlarge text when possible, to decrease demand on the eyes.
